Talent Trumps All in Athletic Recruiting

Before I discuss the importance of winning and going deep into the post season of your sport, I want to be clear that TALENT trumps all in the athletic recruiting process.  If you can play and help college coaches WIN more games at the next level YOU will be recruited.  Even if your team has a dismal record on the field, court or whatever surface your sport.

Winning Can Be the Difference in Your Athletic Recruiting Process

With that being said, bottom line is that WINNING and going deep into your post season can definitely have a positive impact on your college recruiting process…I know this from experience.  I started playing QB in the 6th grade, and I NEVER lost a game.  I do not share that to impress you, but simply to impress upon the importance of winning in the mind’s of a college coach.  I came from a small market – Fargo, North Dakota, but because I was undefeated as a quarterback (thanks to my supporting cast) college coaches took notice.  When Dennis Green was recruiting me from Stanford he flat out told me he wanted to build his program with people that wanted to and knew what it takes to win.  I would like to think that I had some talent too, but at 6′ and 190 lbs as a senior high school, Dennis Green and Stanford were not simply recruiting me because of raw talent…they were recruiting me also because of the intangibles I brought to their program.

2 Things Happen When You Get Used to Winning

The great thing about playing for a winning program is two fold.  One, you get the opportunity to continue to play in front of more scouts against better competition.  Obviously, the coaches want to see how well you perform against top competition, and if your team is going deep into the playoffs and you are playing lights out that will speak volumes to the college coaches.

The second thing that happens when you play for a winning program is that you automatically bring this mindset to your college program.  Let’s face it, WINNING breeds WINNINGWinning becomes an attitude, and college coaches want kids that are going to bring a WINNING attitude to their program.

College coaches renegotiate their contracts based on W’s, so if you can help them get more W’s they want you in their program…it is as simple as that!
