Now, that's a college stadium!
A mom recently asked me what’s the difference between BIG TIME Division 1 recruiting and smaller D1 and D2 schools. The biggest difference is that the BIG TIME D1 schools have the pick of the litter when it comes to talent. They go after the TOP talent in the country, offer them a scholarship and get a VERBAL commitment as early on in the recruiting process as possible. Currently, there are 119 Division 1 football programs.
A smaller D1 or D2 program usually waits in the “weeds” to see what top talent is left over before they offer scholarships. A small school may have their sites set on a player, but they know he is what I call a “tweener” (a guy that may get picked up by a D1 program, but he is borderline). If this “tweener” does not get offered then the smaller D1 and D2 programs will jump in the waters and go after him like piranhas.
Recently, more and more smaller schools are offering early because they will try to “steal” a top recruit if they can get he/she to commit.
Keep in mind, the time lines are still the same (except for D3 because they do not offer athletic scholarships). Whether a school is a BIG TIME D1 program or a smaller program, the time lines for official recruiting visits and National Letter of Intent signing days are still the same.
If you feel like your son or daughter is a “tweener” I would start getting a good feel of where he stands on the BIG TIME college’s recruiting boards, so you as a parent can plan and prepare for a Plan B if necessary.
