As we get deeper and deeper into senior athletic recruiting it is important to know where you stand on a school’s recruiting board. What is a “recruiting board”? EVERY school across the nation uses a recruiting board to put their prospects into a depth chart. For example, let’s say Stanford is recruiting 5 different QB’s for their 2010 class. The Stanford staff will put these 5 QB’s up on their recruiting board and in the order of 1 – 5, number 1 being their TOP QB prospect. This is VERY important information because if you are a school’s top prospect in that position then they will probably offer you a scholarship as early as possible.
If you are being recruited by schools, typically D1-A schools, and you have not received any offers at this time, then you are probably not a school’s top prospect at your position. This is not the end of the world, it just means that if they get the kids higher on their recruiting board to commit then you will probably not get offered a scholarship from that school.
Now, let’s say they haven’t offered you because they are waiting on a decision from one of their other top choices, and this recruit says, “Thanks but NO thanks,” then it will open up a potential scholarship for you.
One of the key things I coach my student-athletes to do is to find out where they are on a school’s recruiting board. Again, if you are their top recruit at your position then chances are really good you are going to get an offer from that school. If you are not a top prospect at your position and coaches are still calling you it is a sign that they are interested in you, but they are probably waiting on one of their top recruits to commit before they offer you a scholarship. Coaches can obviously lie to you and tell you that you are their top guy when you really aren’t. Each coach is different…some will shoot you straight and others will just flat out lie to you…it all part of the college recruiting chess game!
