Don’t Be a Couch Potato this Summer
BE PROACTIVE THIS SUMMER in YOUR RECRUITING PROCESS
Summer can be a slower time in recruiting for a lot of athletes. Do not despair! Keep in mind the coaches are spending a lot of time right now tending to their summer camps, and if you are a fall sport athlete your coaches are pretty much going to be out of the mix for July.
When I played at Stanford a lot of the coaches took pretty much the whole month of July off to spend with their familes, because they know they will not see their family from August to November.
SO HOW DO I STAY PROACTIVE?
1. If you go to a camp this summer, email the coaches that are in communication with you and let them know you just finished an outstanding camp at XYZ school. Email is a GREAT way to easily and effectively keep yourself on a coahces radar screen.
2. Go to SUMMER CAMPS! I am a HUGE proponent of summer camps. It can do wonders for you to raise your stock in the eyes of the coaches at camp. A lot of the athletes I work for are going to camps right now, and they are all telling me GREAT stories about how the camps have really helped them develop and nurture that relations with that college coach.
3. If you cannot go to a school’s camp, then the next best thing is to take an UNOFFICIAL visit to that school to meet the coaches and hopefully some of the players. This is a great way for you to get a feel for the school, coaching staff, and players to see if it is a school that is going to make your TOP 10 list.
THE PATTERN HERE IS…
I hope you can see the pattern this summer is to keep yourself in front of college coaches anyway you can. This is SO important because the coaches want to see your hunger and desire to play at their school by how often you reach out to them to let them know what you are up to this summer. Obviously, you don’t want to be emailing coaches everyday, and I would encourage you to reach out to coaches every 2 weeks. Especially, if you just got done with a camp or some other event that may be important to a coach.
Have you used an effective summer communication system for coaches? If so, please, share it in the comments section below. Thanks.
