This past Wednesday I had the honor to a part of a fantastic recruiting panel at Brentwood high school with former Princeton and pro baseball player Stephen Young, women’s head basketball coach at Occidental College Heidi VanDerveer, and UCLA compliance coordinator Dan Goldberg.
We spoke about different aspects of the college recruiting process, and the one thing the Brentwood athletic director asked me to discuss is the College Recruiting Game Plan.
There are 3 keys to your College Recruiting Game Plan:
- Timeline
- Tools
- Take Charge – Be Proactive
Parents always ask me, “Coach Chris, when should I start promoting my student-athlete to college coaches?”
The BEST time to start promoting your son/daughter to college coaches is once you have QUALITY varsity film. Once you have quality varsity film, then you can start to put together video footage to send out to college coaches for the athletic recruiting process.
Typically, you will start promoting yourself in the recruiting process after your sophomore or junior season.
TOOLS
There are essentially 3 tools you will need to effectively promote yourself to college coaches.
- An athletic resume – Parents, I think it is helpful if you look at this process like a job interview. A coach needs an athletic resume to get an overview of your academic and athletic accomplishments.
- Official Transcript – a college coach needs to have an official transcript from you to effectively evaluate you for his/her program and offer you an athletic scholarship. You can get an official transcript from your high school counselor.
- Highlight Video – Think of your highlight video like a virtual tryout. A coach MUST see you play if they are going to put you on their recruiting board.
TAKE CHARGE – PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE
I believe this is the MOST important step to the college recruiting process . I meet way to many families that leave the college recruiting process up to their high school or club coach. As big as a heart as your coach may have, he/she will never have as much of a vested interest in your college recruiting process as YOU!
Have your coach be a part of college recruiting team, but do not EXPECT them to do this for you.
Once you have the recruiting tools mentioned above, now you need to start PROMOTING yourself to college coaches…PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE! You MUST start sending your information out to college coaches either via snail mail or email…and one of the key things is FOLLOW UP!!!!
If you do not hear back from a coach right away, be sure to follow up with an email or phone call. College coaches have a lot on their plates, so don’t be offended if they do not get back to you right away. In fact, they like it when a student-athlete shows the initiative to call them and follow up. It shows leadership on your part, and EVERY coach wants a LEADER on their team!
